Description:

Primary Job Accountabilities:

In this role as a Black Belt/Master Black Belt/Operational Excellence Engineer, you will be responsible for leading organizational initiatives while partnering with cross-functional leadership and team members to reach targeted business and operational goals through Lean and Six Sigma continuous improvement techniques. As a Lean Six Sigma leader, you will be expected to coach, mentor, and train continuous improvement team members and co-workers on a range of skills from tactical improvement techniques to executive reporting. The functional scope spans the distribution centers entire value chain as well as specific distribution center and/or manufacturing work stations and will require this individual to interact with all levels of the organization (floor to senior management).
This is a local Washington, D.C. metro area position.

 

Essential Functions & Tasks:

- Applies process improvement tools, e.g. Kaizen events, Value Stream Mapping, Takt time analysis, to improve business capabilities; specifically, Six Sigma tools and methodology to improve process capability and eliminate defects, and Lean Manufacturing tools and principles to eliminate waste and improve flow resulting in cost reduction and capacity expansion within the facility(ies).
- Leverage Continuous Improvement frameworks, including, but not limited to, principles of Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma to effect cultural change.
- Oversees cost and profit optimization projects, including project identification, prioritization and selection; tracking project results, monitoring project progress, and reporting on progress toward key performance indicators, strategic goals, and operational goals.
- Champion project and organizational strategic alignment to assure all activities, projects, and achievements are aligned with organizational goals.
- Establishes and drives metrics and performance monitoring systems to quantify and provide accountability for all lean activities.
- Coordinates with all functions and all employees to ensure knowledge transfer and sustained participation in lean and continuous improvement activities.
- Develops and coaches select employees in lean and continuous improvement techniques and practices, including Value Stream Mapping, Takt time, and 5S principles of housekeeping.
- Contribute to culture of Continuous Improvement through coaching, mentoring, and direct instruction to participants with defined tools to build overall capability within the organization.
- Support the executive sponsors, business champion, and project leader(s) in defining initiative scope, identifying stakeholders and managing initiative tracks.
- Serve as a change agent for the initiative by process discipline, quality focus, transparency and accountability.

 

Knowledge & Expertise:

- Commanding knowledge of Lean and Six Sigma Methodologies and their associate tools.
- Experience with time studies and time standard implementation, project cost analysis, and Lean tools.
- Familiarity with shop floor operations and/or distribution center automation for automated materials handling equipment (software and hardware experience preferred).
- Must be organized, be able to work independently, have a strong work ethic, and a proven record of project execution.
- Prior experience communicating both orally and in written with all levels of the organization.
- Experience provide overall leadership, project management and communications, e.g. developing and posting meeting agenda and minutes, performing interpersonal collaboration and facilitation, effective reporting (written, oral, and presentation formats) of review findings.
- Comfort working with large machining / large equipment in a manufacturing or distribution environment.

 

Skills:

- Thorough understanding of process improvement methodologies as well as all the sub tools within common process improvement platforms: Six Sigma, Design for Six Sigma, Lean, Total Quality Management, Statistical Process Control etc.
- Demonstrated strengths in project management processes and methodologies including phase gate review, planning and review methods.
- Excellent training and presentation skills with solid communication capabilities and practices both oral and written.
- Must be competent facilitating Lean Kaizen events, building and implementing national, regional and site level improvement plans, directly providing hands on leadership of key projects and teams.
- Experience going from the shop floor to senior management levels facilitating change in culture of employees, business leaders, departments and functional organizations to embrace Lean and Six Sigma philosophies to significantly improve business execution.
- Demonstrates a results-based leadership style with strong impact and influencing skills.
- Able to effectively navigate and facilitate in a cross-functional environment.
- Ability to establish and build trust between and within groups.
- Coaching and counseling others through continuous improvement projects.
- Excellent public speaking and written skills.
- Able to effectively deal with conflict and leverage differences to a constructive outcome.
- Proficient use of Statistical Process Control, Excel and Minitab.
- Advanced capabilities with Office products including: Word, Excel, Project, etc.
- A minimum of five to eight years of demonstrated continuous improvement experience, including the implementation of Lean operating systems and processes.

 

Experience:

- Must have experience in Six Sigma, along with proven track record for delivering business results even in challenging economic times.
- Record leading Lean Six Sigma projects and kaizen events to deliver results.
- Five or more years of practicing Lean and/or Six Sigma experience in an industrial, distribution, or manufacturing operations environment the analytical abilities required to perform Six Sigma functions.
- Coaching and leading multiple Black Belt candidates and/or Black Belt practitioners.
- Specific detailed experiences: Cycle time studies, Value Stream mapping/ Process mapping , Kaizen event leadership, Knowledge of process mapping tools (Visio, etc.), Statistical tools required (Minitab, Excel, etc.).
- Strong experience in logistics and manufacturing operations.
- Prior consulting and implementation experience preferable.

 

Education:

- 4-year college education required in a quantitative area, e.g. Industrial or other Engineering, Mathematics, etc.; Masters degree preferred.
- Six Sigma Black Belt or Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Certification.
- Desired certifications: Lean Practitioner, APICS, PMP.
