Description
The Senior Database Engineer will also work directly with the Business IT teams on database projects.
Technologies include:
1. Database Products such as SQL Server 2000, 2005, 2008, 200842
2. High Availability Clustering Technologies such as SQL Server Clustering, Veritas Clustering
3. Replication software such as Shareplex, SQL Server Transactional Replication
4. Linux, Windows, and Unix Hardware/Operating Systems
5. Disaster Recovery Solutions including SQL Server log shipping, EMC SRDF
· Lead database design and activities in support of business projects.
· Implement a buildable and cost effective solution to meet business and project needs.
· Interpret business trends to ascertain appropriate optimization of segment ecosystems, driving cost effective solutions and continual efficiencies and improvement through the Database Design and Implementation process
· Work with the product teams to introduce repeatable and standard based patterns to meet business trends and demand.
· Influence development teams on product lifecycle and standards adoption
· Provide input to product teams for reference architecture and implementation standards.
· Development of solution implementation, testing and operations support documentation.
· Ensure designs align to McGraw Hill product and usability standards.
· Capacity review of database designs
· Develop Logical Model Design
· Develop Logical to Physical Model translation
· Lead new Database Creation and Enhancement
· Lead SQL Code Review / Consulting
· Lead Database Regression Testing with New Software Releases. Need to work with Business IT and QA.
· Lead Level 3 performance tuning
· Lead the review of software patches, test the patch installation and backup out, develop installation guidelines, transition to run team for implementation
· Lead the development and update IRG for various products.
· Lead role in product life cycle for all products managed by the DBA teams
· Develop monitoring templates
· Lead in supplying DBA functions to Business IT teams on projects
· Lead in supplying DBA functions to Solutions Engineering team
· Manage, refresh and optimize the product catalog available to Solutions Engineering required for solutions development.
· Assist in steering new products through discovery, testing and approvals process for adoption including the preparation and presentation of design, build, presentation and architectural materials
· Influence development teams on product lifecycle adoption
· Develop and maintain all database engineering documentation
· Continual Improvement to the Database Engineering and Implementation processes
· Provide input to the Annual Demand Planning process to ensure alignment with the segment specific goals and objectives.

· Provide Level 3 Database Engineering Support for Production Support
· Design solutions that integrate to the segment and enterprise-wide business infrastructure platform technologies, standards and dependent services for the McGraw-Hill Companies including Standard & Poor's, McGraw-Hill Education, JD Power and Associates, Platt's, Business Week and others.
· Ensure adherence to assigned project budgets and serve as liaison to Solutions Engineering.
· Contribute to the development of Database Engineering budget.
· Assist in overseeing the lifecycle of database, replication and ETL technologies.
Qualifications
· Bachelor in computer-related field or equivalent experience.
· Significant expertise (7+ years) in defining, designing and deploying global business database infrastructures both internally and externally customer focused.
· Understanding and experience in application development life-cycle and alternative SDLC methodologies such as Agile.
· Strong communication and influencing skills, with the ability to communicate new concepts, and drive change in process and behaviors.
· Strong analytical focus, results-oriented and execution driven, with the ability to align technology developments with the generation of potential competitive business advantage.
· Technology competencies include SQL Server.
· Bottom-line oriented with the ability to push self for results.
· Has played a lead role in research, development and implementation of database technologies in an enterprise environment.
· Architecture and design for Database systems technologies, with SME knowledge in one or more database related technologies.
· Significant experience with product development, testing, prototyping proof of concept and migration issues, problems and considerations.
· Has a clear perspective on product and technology pattern integration and interconnectivity
· Strong problem solving and root cause analysis skills. Reporting and metric production and utilization to support strategic planning and decisions
